A New Coffee Shop Opens on Bank Street

Elle Bechtold

The town of New Milford’s community has been impacted by the loss of the beloved Bank Street Coffee House, which closed October 28th, 2017. However, the downtown New Milford area will welcome a new coffee spot with the opening of the Alpenhaus’s Java Haus.

The Alpenhaus serves authentic classic German cuisine, with a cordial interior and very hospitable atmosphere. Although, on April 9th, they extended their location to hold a coffee shop called the Java Haus. I was glad to interview the owners of Bank Street’s Alpenhaus, Jeff Yenter and Manuela Dürre Young, about the opening and future of the Java Haus. The Java Haus is conveniently located on the level above their dining area and tap room, serving pastries, soups, espresso based drinks, and many other classic cafe favorites with an European twist. The Java Haus is presumed to have hours from 4-7, and within the upcoming summer, events such as coffee tastings and live music.

Yenter expressed the significance and inspiration of opening the Java Haus as, “…a small or large community’s space for people to come together and not only enjoy coffee and pastries, but each other’s company…”. Yenter carried on conveying the importance of togetherness within European communities, but also spreading it to our very own exceptional American town of New Milford. The Java Haus will be a wonderful addition to the Bank Street scene, and will continue branching out the strong sense of community New Milford continues to thrive in.
