On January 11, 2017, the New Milford High School gymnastics team competed in their first home meet against the Trumbull Eagles. The meet started out like any other, with the girls lining up to salute the flag, holding their stuffed frogs tightly in their grip. Every gymnastics team does a cheer before the meet begins, and it is safe to say no other teams cheer is quite as unique, or as exciting as New Milford’s.

The order of the meet was vault, bars, beam, and then floor routines. The Green Wave competed well, but the skilled Trumbull Eagles ended up going home with the win. Now knowing what they need to improve, the girls are looking forward to getting back in the gym. “We were upset that we didn’t win the season opener,” said junior Aly Svinte, “but I’m confident that by working hard tomorrow, we’ll be able to pull out a win on Friday.”

And pull out a win they did. The Green Wave triumphed over both Oxford and Newtown by taking first place at Kinetic Kids Gym on Friday the 13th. The team won by two and a half points, and although thrilled with their first win of the season, they feel the score is a little too close for comfort. To win their fourth consecutive SWC Championship, the girls know they need to raise the bar, and are excited to do so.

The New Milford High School gymnastics team is lead by coach Bethany Mihaly, who is just as excited as the girls about winning their fourth SWC. “I feel good going into this season,” Mihaly said, “We have a lot of new girls who have all been working hard to up their skill.”

You win consecutive SWC Championships by working hard, and hardly anyone knows that better than New Milford Gymnastics.
