It has not come easy, but the Wave Baseball team has won their first eight games and already qualified for states. This astonishing pace has been a shock to some, as The News Times failed to include the Green Wave as one of their “five teams to watch” in the SWC for the second year.

Five of their wins have been one run nail biters, one recently on a walk-off single by Kory Cyr in the tenth inning of an 8-7 slugfest. The team was written off by many after losing so many contributors, but the doubters have now been silenced. “So far the season has gone smoothly,” expressed mountainous first baseman and West Point commit, Noah Martinez, “The team needs to stay mentally strong and motivated in order to remain a top tier team in the state.”

Still, the scariest part of this team is not what they have done, but what they are poised to do in the future. The team is young and just finding their footing on this level of play, so their success seems sustainable. As league play continues this will play a large part in helping the wins pile up. Tough games are on the horizon, as the team has yet to play Masuk and has a marquee matchup against rival New Fairfield at Bridgeport Bluefish Stadium. They will need this high level of play in the future in order to win the conference and state championships as the team sets out to every season. On the rest of the season, shortstop and University of Bridgeport commit Matt Rodriguez said, “I’m really excited to start this playoff push soon, I couldn’t ask for a better group of guys to do it with.”
Look out for the Wave as they shoot for their first conference championship in 13 years and state championship ever!
