This year, the New Milford Track and Field team are looking better than ever before. Under coaches Basich, Rebstock, and Farrell, the team has been working extremely hard to get ready for the fast upcoming season. So far, things have been progressing along nicely for the boys, and this could be the breakout year that the team has been longing to have.

This year marks the first time that the new track has been available to the track and field team. Each member has to get used to the pits, track, and turf rather quickly, as this year the SWC track and field championships are being held at New Milford High School.

When asked, track member Dylan Keeler viewed the upcoming season as, “Very promising. We really feel as if we are the team to beat this year.”

New Milford will be looking for a bit of redemption this season, as the indoor track season during the winter did not go as planned. The boys lost the SWC championship by just one point. Certainly, they will not be forgetting about it anytime soon.

The team is also in a rebuilding stage. Last year, the team graduated many senior leaders who were a big part of the program and who took them very far in postseason competitions. There will be some very big shoes to fill, especially in the sprinting and throwing areas.

Regardless, the team this year is looking up to the challenge of conquering SWCs. The cross country runners (who won SWCs in the fall), led by Herlandt Lino and Eli Nahom are looking very strong heading into the season. The 4×1 relay team consisting of Luke Chastain, Andre Vial, Matt Bouzoukis and Shane Fedigan are all very young, but have progressed quicker than anyone could have expected and will be a real force to be reckoned with. The throwing group, led by senior Craig Shanahan, are also continuing to improve with every passing day.

Anything short of an SWC Championship for this group will not satisfy them. However, there are still tough teams in the SWC that won’t roll over easily. A couple of teams in particular to watch out for are Weston and Immaculate. These are teams that beat New Milford last year by a slim margin, and this year New Milford will be looking to avenge those losses. Regardless, New Milford will still be the team to beat in the SWC and will be looking to prove it day in and day out.
