Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but our Green Wave wrestlers are undefeated near the end of January, as always seems to be the case. Thus far they have defeated 8 opponents, including those they defeated en route to a tournament victory, and have quickly established themselves as a major force in the SWC and states once again. Last year the team took home the SWC Championship and the Class L State Title, and this year looks even brighter for the team.

It has been smooth sailing thus far for the Wave, beating teams such as New Fairfield, Xavier, and Bunnell. Recently, the team took on fellow SWC powerhouse Newtown and came out on top. It was a very good showing by the seasoned veterans of New Milford. When asked, wrestler Vincent Rago viewed the match as, “A big win for us, but we had a lot of confidence and we thought we could win the whole time. Newtown had a good chance but they could not beat us.”

This was a huge win for the boys as Newtown is a favorite to challenge New Milford for the SWC crown. Regardless, they know that they will be seeing Newtown down the road in Opens and New Englands and will have to be ready for the fight a revenge-minded Newtown will give them.

Recently, the boys also managed to win the John D. Gorman Tournament in Cumberland,  Rhode Island. They beat some solid teams such as Cumberland, Bristol Eastern who they normally would not see, and also managed to defeat SWC rival Newtown. Eventually this culminated in their inevitable coronation as the best team at the event. With all their early success however, the boys will have to prepare for their first major test coming up on January 23 against a powerhouse Danbury squad. Danbury has been ranked first in the state coaches preseason poll and has remained in first for the first four weeks of the season. Danbury handed New Milford its only regular season loss last year, and look to do the same this year. But they will have their work cut out for them this year as the Greenwave squad hope to rise to the challenge.

Danbury looks as though it is the one team that could give New Milford trouble this regular season. While historically New Milford has not been able to get past this powerhouse, this year’s squad is hoping that they are talented enough, and hardworking enough, to change their fortunes. Even in the event that they are to lose to Danbury, the team is already well on their way toward winning the SWC’s and Class L’s once again. A win over Danbury would do wonders for their State Opens prospects, as well as New Englands. Regardless, this year’s squad seems to have taken the torch from last year’s seamlessly, and the dynasty looks to be fully intact. What remains to be seen is whether this team can improve on the feats of previous year’s squads, and it once again seems that they will have to go through Danbury to do it.
