The K-Wave has been growing stronger each day. But what exactly is the K-Wave?

K-Wave is the acronym used for the Korean music phenomenon of K-pop. The whole world is getting on to K-pop, but there are still so many people who do not know what it is. The performer who took the world by storm, PSY, is part of K-pop. PSY is managed by one of K-pop’s three biggest companies, YG Entertainment. Though PSY fever is over, the genre of music is still alive.

Over the past few years, K-pop stars have been featured in countless American shows; either by name or through special appearances. Some notable examples are Jay Park and BtoB (Born to Beat) in “America’s Next Top Model,” 2ne1 in “The Bachelor,” and many more. Today however, K-pop has been getting more attention due to BTS (Bangtan Boys) performing at the Billboard Music Awards.

K-pop is mainly known for the flashy costumes, hard choreography, and strong vocals, things that BTS have been delivering for four years. BTS are a seven member boy group nominated for the Top Social Artist by the Billboard. They won the award with more than 300 million votes, beating artists like Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Shawn Mendes, and Justin Bieber. BTS has a very strong twitter base, which helped nominate them for this award. Since the nomination announcement on April 23, fans have been sending tweets to Billboard, asking them to invite BTS to the awards. These seven boys are truly supported by their fans, and are expected to deliver a magnificent performance.

Though K-pop stars seem to be happy and bubbly, they have to go through intense years of training in order to become stars, provided by companies such as YG Entertainment, SM Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment, until they finally debut. Through this program, they must deal with stress, sweat, and exhaustion, in order to succeed. Their dreams of debuting and being a star, however, helps them through this stressful process.
For many, K-pop is a way to get out of poverty and achieve a better life. Many stars do not think of anything else other than helping their families. Next time that you hear of K-pop, think of all the things that the stars went through in order to achieve their dreams, and how they managed to get this far.
